True story: I met Danny Trejo briefly at some local L.A. community festival thing. We were over at a booth where they were doing dog rescue and I told him what a big fan I was of his work. He kind of looked at me like I was a jackass. We talked about the Mike Vick thing. I can say for certain that he is as absolutely scary looking in real life as he is on screen.

Machete, as some of you know, began as just a joke trailer in Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double-feature “Grindhouse”. Some could argue it was the best part of the whole movie. Let’s face it, QT and RR have done much better work. I would say even their two shorts made for the terribly uneven “Four Rooms” was better… but I digress.

The Machete trailer was so well-received that it was a pretty easy leap to take it to the big screen. Trejo plays Machete Cortez, whose character is actually the same uncle to the young heroes in Rodriguez’s much more lighthearted “Spy Kids” movies. As you can tell, Machete is not a family movie unless your family’s name is Manson.

Robert DeNiro, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin… really, what an interesting supporting cast in this thing. I’ve been a fan of Robert Rodriguez’s work since “El Mariachi” and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do as one of the producers of the Predator remake: “Predators” but in the meantime, Machete looks pretty badass to me.
