So I woke up monday morning excited beyond belief with a crazy vision of a 24/7 all-talk radio network that could stream live, but would mostly just play pre-recorded talk-related content.

And as I began to piece together what it all meant, I had an epiphany. I didn’t want to be mired down with scheduled programming. One of the things I love about internet radio (and what I find compelling about radio in general) is not knowing what’s coming up next. The randomness of what I may hear if I stay tuned.

So I set it up… an actual talk radio station… its working in private beta right now and will soon be unleashed to the public.

And it dawned on me what I want to do with RadioMYN is pick cool short-form “talk” content. 10 minutes ore less from whomever wants to send it to me, and I’d listen to each one and if I liked it, if it fit my tastes and I thought it was really interesting, I’d throw it into the “rotation.”

I just want to curate cool audio programming… and I’m asking you to create it and share it.

So maybe you have something you’re pissed about. Do a rant… Maybe you have a cool interview or a section of your podcast/show that you’ve done in the past. Maybe it’s a skit or a reading of your poetry or something you’ve written. Maybe you just want to talk about something on your mind.

I’m not interesting in playing your stand-alone promos… if you send me a segment of something and you want to throw in at the end where it came from, that’s fine.

Heaven knows I have hours and hours of content that I can and probably will share, but I want the overall station’s aesthetic to reflect something more interesting than just 24/7 of my own work.

Here are three different ways to import images to your iPhone:

VIA EMAIL: One of the easiest ways to get the graphic you have selected on to your iPhone is to email it to yourself, then download it from the mail program on your phone. Tap and hold to bring up the menu, save the image to your phone.

VIA THE WEB: You can also save a photo from a website you visit with the built-in Safari browser on your iPhone. Just navigate to the web page with the image, then tap and hold on the picture you want to save. A menu will pop up, then tap the “Save Image” button.

Tap on the Photos (sunflower) icon on your iPhone and find the directory where you saved the wallpaper graphic. (If you saved a picture via email or directly from the web, it will be in your Camera Roll folder.)

SET YOUR IPHONE WALLPAPER IMAGE

View your chosen image, tap it, then click on the box with arrow icon on the bottom left of your screen. A menu will pop up — see an example at right — then click the “Use as Wallpaper” option. From there, you can move and scale the photo as desired. When you’re happy with how it looks, click the “Set” button.

Next, you will have the option to select the image to be your iPhone background for your home screen(s), the lock screen or both. (In the graphic at the top of the page, the lock screen is on the left and the home screen is on the right.) Make your choice, and your iPhone will take care of the rest.

As an indie, it’s always tough to get the word out. I’ve been lucky to get a bunch of radio interviews across the country to publicize my new book, “Fatal Sunset: Deadly Vacations” and I can gladly report that it’s been helping to move some copies. I wanted to share with you a few simple tips to make sure your next radio interview about your book is as effective as possible.

1. Use a stopwatch – In those brief moments before you go on air, you’ll get a moment to ask the host or producer how many segments you’re doing and how long each one will be. If the segment you’re doing is only a few minutes long, you don’t want to be halfway through talking about something when the DJ/Host throws to the next break.  At the end of the commercial break (when the music bumper begins and the DJ/Host starts talking) start your stopwatch. They’ll introduce you, intro whatever it is you’re there to talk about. This could eat up the first 30 seconds or even more so now the 8 minute segment you’re booked for is even shorter. Remember that right at the end of the segment, before the next commercial break, the DJ/Host will throw to that break, eating up even more of your precious on-air time. General rule, however long they tell you the segment is, subtract a minute for these bumps in and out of break.

Using the stopwatch will help keep you on message. Be concise. Keep an eye on your time. You’ll never have enough time to say it all so make sure you stick to the most important and marketable/interesting points.  About a minute before your segment is about to end, you need to be wrapping up your spiel with a strong hook and your call to action.

2. Make a Cheat Sheet – If there are important anecdotes, tips, facts or sections about your book, make a cheat sheet of notes beforehand. Dont’ rely on memory. Anytime I’ve done a radio interview over the phone it’s been a juggling act with keeping the host’s name straight, the name of the program I’m on along with keeping an eye on the stopwatch all while I’m talking and answering questions. If I have a few important things I want to make sure I say during an interview, I’ll put them on my cheat sheet. I have a few concise sentences about the book, little marketing hooks, that I like to throw in. I don’t need to be pulling them all from memory or trying to search for a specific thing in the book while I’m talking about something else.

3. Keep a Copy of Your Book Open – The host may throw you an unexpected curveball and refer to something in the book, or while they are talking you may think of an opportunity to quote something specific from the book. A copy of your book as an electronic document is searchable and given that you may only have a few seconds to find that thing you’re looking for, every second counts.

4. Know Your Call to Action – If the host asks you where the audience can find your book make sure you’re clear and concise with the info. Your call to action should be brief and you can read it right from your cheat sheet. Don’t give too many URLs in your call to action. Everyone knows they can get books at Amazon so you have a better chance of a listener who is not by a computer remembering that instead of the name of your website. A lot of radio listeners are multitasking while listening–if you’re doing a drive-time show your audience is primarily behind the wheel. They’ll probably have enough trouble remembering your name and the name of your book.

5. Research the Station - Every radion station has a website. Take a look at it beforehand. Look at the bio of the Host you’ll be talking to. If you discover something about that station’s local area or the host that relates to something in your book, you should definitely bring it up to give you a closer tie to their audience’s community. It also helps in making sure you get the host’s name right.

Most of all…have fun, bring the energy and spread your brand!

My dad, Barry Nemcoff, was a very interesting man who led a very interesting life. Born in China to Russian emigrants, he was a WWII veteran who later travelled all around the world as a journalist and cultural attaché for the U.S. government and then came home to make a name for himself as a TV news producer.

Before he passed away in 2008, he began writing down some of his stories from his time abroad in the early 1960s. I’m happy to say that DACCA DAZE is the latest book from Glenneyre Press and is now available for the Kindle for just $1.99. 

It might have been the other side of the moon. In 1960, Dhaka (then known as ‘Dacca’), East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh) was, for all practical purposes, almost that far removed from the consciousness of the American people. Geographically, it was certainly on the other side of the world globe from American cities like Chicago or Philadelphia, for example. In the late ’50s and early ’60s, any news emanating from that part of the world was considered pretty far out.

Amidst the political intrigue and social upheaval that was further complicated by the Cold War in the early sixties, Barry Nemcoff, a former news reporter from Philadelphia, arrived in Dacca, East Pakistan with his wife and infant children in tow on an assignment with the U. S. Information Agency. The purpose of the agency’s work: To tell America’s story, spread its technical and scientific know-how, and contribute to the development of a nation.

What follows are the recollections of one ordinary American citizen who spent two years on the subcontinent, literally plucked out of American society and thrust, almost overnight, into a strange culture whose language and way of life was as esoteric to him and his family as anything coming out of fiction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
BARRY R. NEMCOFF spent the Second World War serving on a minesweeper and became a newspaperman after graduating from Temple University. A CBS Fellowship under Edward R. Murrow would propel him on a television news career that took him from news director at WCAU in Philiadelphia to “Good Morning America” and then later becoming ABC News’ Chicago Bureau Chief where he would launch “World News Tonight” with Frank Reynolds, Max Robinson and Peter Jennings. After winning a Cine Golden Eagle for his documentary on Alaskan sled dogs, he was appointed Assistant Dean of Communications at his alma mater. Eventually, he would return to television, later retiring as the Executive Producer of PBS’ “Nightly Business Report.”

How does it feel to have someone say that you are one of their favorite authors? Truly amazing, that’s how. Wow.

This is one of those things that really wanted to acknowledge. Over the last few days, I’ve had a couple people mention that I was one of their favorite authors and I wanted to find a way to simply express how incredibly much that means to me.

Writing with the intent of being a “writer” started for me in the second grade. I’ve been incredibly lucky over the last few years to have such great outlets for my writing (which sometimes seems more like creating graffiti with attitude) and I’ve been even more fortunate to connect with people from all over the world who have been eager to consume the content that I create.

But to have even one person tell me that I’m one of their favorite writers is an honor beyond measure for me. In the past, I’ve had one or two people mention it here and there and I never really knew how to respond other than with what may have seemed like a shy, “thanks” that really wasn’t worthy of the amazing compliment paid to me. Now, I really want to acknowledge, without hesitation, how fantastic it feels to know that my work makes such an impact on even a handful of people. I’m truly grateful, deeply humbled and flattered beyond measure. And as long as you’re willing to keep coming back to read my books, I will continue working as hard as I can to entertain you. That’s my promise.

“Diary of a Madman” is a story about a serial killer who is manipulated by a mysterious stranger. Thematically, it is a story about the loss of identity and the loss of self. Throughout the entire book, which is told in first person, we never even learn the name of our protagonist (which is intentional).

Some of you know that the Shadow Falls books, “Badlands” and “Angel of Death” are tales about a man who discovers that he is in fact, the embodiment of “Death.” If you have either read “Angel of Death” or heard the audio book version, you are probably already familiar with how it directly relates to the ending of “Diary of a Madman.”

Diary/Badlands/Angel of Death make up the heart of what I refer to as The Angel of Death Chronicles (AODC).

Yes, INFINITY is a book that is riddled with AODC references and Easter eggs. No, you do not have to have previously read any of the AODC books to understand what INFINITY is all about. That being said, let me peel back another layer…

Think of the concept of “demons.” What does it mean to you? Who are demons? How do they manipulate people? What is their purpose? What do they want? More importantly, where do they come from? Those voices inside of your head compelling you to do bad things. Are they part of your consciousness? Or did they originate from somewhere else, infecting you and your mind like some kind of parasite?

INFINITY exists in a world where all of those questions are answered. The AODC books exist in a world where all those questions are asked.

In “Badlands” Galan Altos (an anagram for “a lost angel”) is a killer who is haunted by his past and is tormented by the ghosts that follow him. At the end of the book he comes to a startling realization about his true identity. In “Angel of Death” we fast-forward 150 years in time to find that Galen’s consciousness is being manipulated from one life to the next in order to send him down a darkened path of no return. He is a being with no control over his existence. In “Angel of Death” he finally becomes aware of this lack of control and fights to alter the destiny that has been chosen for him by his father. Standing in Galen’s way is his brother, also chosen to assume the mantle of “Death”–with the two brothers fighting to see who will ultimately become Death. Whereas Galen is a being that will only kill for a reason, his brother is a cold-hearted murderer happy to see the streets run red with blood… (and yes, there is a strong Cain and Abel reference in the Shadow Falls books that I blogged about here).

Consider then our titular character from “Diary of a Madman” and how he is manipulated by a stranger named Eddy into choosing other killers as his victims. who is Eddy? Could Eddy in fact, be a demon?

Now, the true relationship between INFINITY and the AODC books can only be revealed once you have read INFINITY and INFINITY Rising, the direct sequel that picks up right where infinity leaves off. all of these books make up a very layered overall universe. The INFINITY books are just the top-most layer of it all.

I will tell you this much. There are things referenced in the infinity books that take place in the as-yet-to-be-written “Diary of a Madman” sequel that have to do with Ian’s past before he became part of this demon-hunting cult known as the Church of Infinity. Also, some of you may recognize passages from “Badlands” that are in a book Ian reads called “Exit the Valley” penned by “Thomas Holt” — the same name used by the Preacher who burns down his own church with his entire congregation inside (as revealed in Badlands). The story behind how Thomas Holt wrote “Exit the Valley” is a part of the Shadow Falls canon that hasn’t been told yet.

So yes, it’s complicated… some may say convoluted, but these three different universes and how they all are essentially concentric circles of one another has been something I’ve been working on for nearly a decade. It’s only now that I’m able to reveal how these puzzle pieces all fit together.

It should be noted that my dad, Barry Nemcoff, couldn’t stand Nixon. Hated the man’s politics… but when you are asked to shake the hand of the leader of the free world, you do so with respect and honor. Funny thing was that I think my father was ashamed of this photo and I never even saw it until I came across it in a box of his old pictures after he died. I suppose most people would have framed it and put it up on a wall. He hid it away and never told anybody. Before spending decades in television news, my dad was in the foreign service and although I heard a number of stories about what he did while serving overseas, I still think there are some secrets he never told anybody.

I actually remember being in Washington D.C. with my father on August 8th, 1974. I recall we were staying in a hotel that had a view of either the White House or the Capitol Building, I can’t remember exactly though it seems unlikely that it was the White House… I remember we watched Nixon resign from office on the TV set. I couldn’t tell you why we were there other than my dad was there covering the story.

UPDATE: The Internet is a wonderful thing. A quick check of the Nixon archives leads me to believe this photo was taken in the White House on June 18th, 1971.

One of the interesting aspects of the KDP Select program was the ability to put my book up as a free download for a short period of time. From the KDP Select promo control panel window, I chose 12/31 to 1/2, knowing there’d be a good amount of traffic on Amazon over the New Year’s holiday weekend.

You don’t accrue sales royalties for free books downloaded, but I figured there would be some good branding opportunities to be had by getting in front of new readers. That seemed obvious.

What didn’t hit me until a couple of days later was that the REAL promotional value is not so much in the hope that free book downloaders will come back and buy more of my stuff BUT instead now THE DOOMSDAY CLUB is now newly associated with dozens of other similar genre books thanks to Amazon’s brilliant discover mechanism otherwise known as: Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought

You probably can’t see it because the screenshot has compressed to fit this window, but now THE DOOMSDAY CLUB is part of the buying history of 13 pages of associated books. (That’s 8 books per “page”). I can’t tell you exactly how many “pages” of associated similar genre books were there before. I think it was less than four.

Over the course of the free promo, TDC was downloaded for free over 1,000 times and rose to #4 on the charts for free books in the sub-category of “Men’s Adventure” so I think the exposure it received during the free giveaway period was pretty decent. However, because I believe the real value in this promotional tool is that whenever someone happens to look up one of many other books listed in the “Customers Also Bought” list for TDC, my book will come up on that page as something similar-minded genre fiction consumers picked up.

Now, I have seen new paid downloads after TDC went back to $2.99 so I think it will help this book get more visibility in a very crowded market for thrillers… HOWEVER… and I’ll let you in on a little secret that you can now be partly privy to if you’ve managed to read this far…

Last year, on top of the 11 other books of mine I released, I also wrote and published two other books under secret pseudonyms. (One non-fiction, one fiction… and no, don’t ask because I personally find it much more amusing to keep it a secret for reasons that are interesting only to me.) The purpose of this particular experiment was to see if I could release books that would get zero social media mentions and have no website. Basically, I was just releasing these books on Amazon, etc… to see if they would sell. So, I did the same KDP Select promo with one of them during the same exact period and have now seen the paid downloads really take off for the same reasons I expect TDC is now getting more traffic.

So yes, I’m becoming a fan of KDP Select and I’m contemplating enrolling more of my books into the program to enhance their discovery potential by Amazon consumers. I especially think I may make all of my new titles exclusive to Amazon for their initial three months in release. We’ll see…

That’s right.. the Rev. MYN is back and “Admit You Hate Yourself”, the sequel to “Go Forth and Kick Some Ass” is almost ready. I’m giving it one final polish before it goes to the editor. With a little luck, it’ll be out soon… stay tuned!

Even back in 2005 when I founded Glenneyre Press, the writing was on the wall (so to speak). It was obvious things the winds of change were blowing in the publishing industry and I felt it was a perfect time to get in and start experimenting with ways to disrupt the norm. We put out some P.O.D. paperback books via Amazon and other online sales channels, got some mainstream attention thanks to Access Hollywood, caught the eye of some folks in NYC’s vaunted publishing community and became profitable by 2008. But it wasn’t until the ebook revolution came calling that things really got serious.

It was right after seeing our sales numbers from the 2010 holiday season that I realized exactly how quickly ebook publishing would become the most explosive platform available for me to exploit what it is that I do. By the end of February, I made a critical decision to make Glenneyre Press my full-time focus. By March, I had begun to put the pedal to the metal.

The Kindle, the Nook… these weren’t “devices.” No, they were platforms.

In April, “Where’s My F*cking Latte” had climbed to #1 on Amazon’s Kindle best seller list for books about Television. To date, it’s bee atop that list ever since. In July, “The Killing of Osama Bin Laden” became Amazon’s #1 book on terrorism and, in a very short time, sold incredibly well, becoming an Amazon non-fiction best seller in the process.

All in all, Glenneyre Press released twelve titles in 2011, five of which spent some time on  Kindle sub-category best seller lists. Other titles spent time on various best seller lists for Nook and iBooks titles. Not bad for a tiny company like us, I think.

But the main focus had always been to begin building up the catalog for the holiday buying rush I knew would happen. I knew the more back catalog we had out, the more Kindle, Nook and iBooks downloads we could sell. I watched the sales numbers start to track higher starting with the first night of Hannukah.

Then came Christmas day.

December was a record-breaking month for Glenneyre Press. We sold more ebooks (and physical books) than any other time in the company’s history. The week between Christmas and New Year’s was incredible. Amazon announced record ebook sales and  my push to be ready for the holidays really panned out.

We didn’t need to raise the profile of the company that much. All we had to do was be in the water when the epic wave hit. The sales rankings of our books stayed about the same, but the daily sales numbers exploded. That alone, told me all I needed to know.

And as many devices and ebooks were sold last year, it’s going to pale compared to what’s coming for December 2012, so you better believe we’re going to be gunning to have lots more titles ready by then. With the books we have planned, this year we go into our next phase… because I believe there’s still plenty of vertical growth yet to come.

Back on April 22nd, 2011, I noticed that my book Where’s My F*cking Latte had hit #1 on the Kindle best seller list for Television for the first time.

Ever since, WMFL has owned that chart, holding onto the top spot and I’m very proud to say that it will end 2011 still at #1.
