What I’m Reading
The Maze Runner – Yes, you should read it
Jan 12th
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.
Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.
Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.
Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.
In short, if you’re a fan of LOST and love those great sci-fi stories of people who wake up somewhere with no idea how they got there and no idea how to get out like Twilight Zone’s “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” or the movie “Cube”, you’ll love THE MAZE RUNNER.
And since it’s a YA book, even though there is much peril and a few deaths, there is no blood, gore or sex. Sure, if you’re a fan of blood, gore and sex in your horror like me such things would have enhanced the story but overall not having blood and gore doesn’t detract from the enjoyable experience or reading The Maze Runner.
I give this book an enthusiastic: RECOMMEND
What I’m Reading: Infected by Scott Sigler
Aug 18th
Yeah, I’m doing it backwards but I picked up Scott Sigler’s “Infected” for the Kindle and reading it on my iPhone after enjoying the hell out of “Contagious”. Truly, to Scott’s credit, he’s such a good writer that I didn’t need to read Infected first to fully understand what was happening in Contagious. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into this one.
Some of the books I’ve just finished recently and are definitely worth a mention are
HOW TO SURVIVE A ROBOT UPRISING by Daniel H. Wilson
We had Daniel as a guest on Radio Go Daddy and he was fantastic. Got a chance to read the book the week before and thought it was incredibly comprehensive in terms of all the ways you could actually survive a theoretical robot uprising (Transistor Rodeo 2, anyone?) Plus, the artwork is incredi-cool.
THE TRAVELLER by John Twelve Hawks
Who is John Twelve Hawks, you ask? Nobody really knows who is behind this pesudonym. Rumor is he’s actually the alter ego of 12 Hawks’ literary agent. Either way, the book, about a world where cutting edge technology is, in fact, being used to control and observe every human being and the secret society of warriors trying to stop The Vast Machine from gaining control of everything you say or do, is not only chilling in its very Orwellian tones but a pretty cool thriller as well.
HATER PREVIEW by David Moody
Apr 2nd
Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by J.A. Bayona
The folks at Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press asked me to record a special preview of HATER a great new novel by the very talented U.K. horror writer David Moody. The preview is just of the prologue and first chapter but I think it’ll give you an inkling of the insanity that follows. HATER is available now wherever books are sold. You can hear the preview I narrated here:

REMAIN CALM DO NOT PANIC TAKE SHELTER WAIT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS THE SITUATION IS UNDER CONTROL Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened ‘Haters’ by the media, the attackers strike without warning, killing all who cross their path. The assaults are brutal, remorseless and extreme: within seconds, normally rational, self-controlled people become frenzied, vicious killers. There are no apparent links as a hundred random attacks become a thousand, then hundreds of thousands. Everyone, irrespective of gender, age, race or any other difference, has the potential to become a victim – or a Hater. People are afraid to go to work, afraid to leave their homes and, increasingly, afraid that at any moment their friends, even their closest family, could turn on them with ultra violent intent. Waking up each morning, no matter how well defended, everyone must now consider the fact that by the end of the day, they might be dead. Or perhaps worse, become a killer themselves. As the status quo shifts, ATTACK FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS LATER becomes the order of the day… only, the answers might be much different than what you expect…. In the tradition of H. G. Wells and Richard Matheson, Hater is one man’s story of his place in a world gone mad – a world infected with fear, violence, and HATE.
