The MYN Custom Yellow Strat Body Guitar – The Yoshicaster

Shadow Falls fan John asked me about the guitar that appears in the OLD SPICE GUY, YOU SUCK music video and I promised him I’d post a photo of it.

The whole guitar is custom made. EMG’s, original Floyd Rose. I’ve had it since 1986. Originally it had a metallic blue body but after a crack developed near one of the Floyd Rose pins in 1989, I replaced it with this taxi cab yellow Warmouth body which I loved because it looked like the axe Letterman’s guitar player Sid McGuinness was using. Originally it had 3 EMG single coils but I carved the body and pickguard to put in an EMG Humbucker in the bridge (don’t ask which though, I forget). Even though I’ve had a few other guitars over the years, including a really great Mike Rutherford model Steinberger that I played on my “Project Overkill” score for Konami, this has been my main axe most of my life. My Berklee pals laughed when they saw it in the video since most of them haven’t seen it in two decades. So, I guess this is probably my oldest, still functional, DIY project.

I think our guitars are related. Here’s mine:

(Hope you can get in there.)

I think we have the same neck. No pickguard on mine, and my Floyd isn’t recessed, but otherwise they’re pretty damn close.

I like the pickguard-less body on yours better.

Yours definitely looks like Sid’s though. He played an ESP didn’t he?

Because mine’s missing the pickguard it’s not routed – it’s like a Les Paul with the rear routed controls and all that stuff, so it weighs a TON. Mahogany body too, so it’s even heavier. It’s kind of a strat shaped Les Paul. You try the Yngwie guitar flip with this thing and you’re either unconscious or wishing you were, because it will clock you right in the back of the head.

I had EMGs in it originally, but I put some Seymour Duncan’s in it a few years back, and it has a tremblock and a D-Tuna on it so I can slap it in dropped D without having to totally retune it. Other than that, it’s the same as when I got it in 1988.

    Thanks for sharing that pic!
